  1. Jan 12,  · Having been a big fan of both Bauhaus and Japan in the early eighties, I remember being disappointed by this album (although I loved the cover). 2. Fretless bass plays a central role on The Waking Hour, lending these abstracted new wave compositions a dark, jazzy undercurrent over which dance warped guitar, sax, synths, and (of course) Murphy's vocals, delivering cryptic messages to be deciphered by the stoned and depressed. 9. Jul 28,  · The Waking Hour is not a quiet album. The gorgeous, languid artwork belies the power recorded on the vinyl. Emotions, like the rhythms, are raw. But it’s not a rawness of unbridled power – the power is generated within strict boundaries, and this gives The Waking Hour a pent up and haunting quality. Cornwall Stone is mysterious and dank.
